When It Became Real

I didn’t expect paperwork to ever make me emotional.

But here we are.

A sales tax permit.

A card reader.

A piece of mail with my name on it that says, yes, you are allowed to do this.

This was the moment Maker & Reader quietly crossed from idea into reality.

There was no confetti. No big announcement. Just me standing in my kitchen, holding documents that represent responsibility, commitment, and a very real next step; on paper that felt important enough that made everyone else feel it too. And suddenly I felt everything all at once. Excited, scared, overwhelmed, proud, and strangely calm.

Starting something small and handmade is romantic in the beginning. You picture cozy workspaces, thoughtful products, slow mornings creating things with intention. And that part is still true. But then comes this other side, the side where you choose to take yourself seriously.

Permits.

Taxes.

Systems.

Showing up even when you feel unsure.

This step felt heavier than I expected because it meant admitting something out loud:

I don’t want this to be temporary.

I want to build something that lasts.

That’s scary. Because caring deeply always is.

I’m learning that growth doesn’t usually arrive in big dramatic leaps. It shows up in quiet decisions. Decisions to register, to track, to prepare, to imagine a future where this work continues. It’s choosing sustainability over comfort, intention over impulse.

Maker & Reader has always been rooted in care. Care for ingredients. Care for the people using what I make. Care for the process itself. And now that care extends to the structure behind it all. The unglamorous parts that protect the work and allow it to grow.

I don’t have everything figured out. Not even close. There will be mistakes, learning curves, and moments where I wonder what I’ve gotten myself into. But there’s also something steady underneath all of that: readiness.

Not perfection.

Not fearlessness.

Just readiness.

If you’re reading this while standing on the edge of something you love, feeling both pulled forward and terrified, you’re not alone. Sometimes the bravest thing we do is keep going anyway, one quiet milestone at a time.

Today, Maker & Reader took another step forward.

And so did I.

Rooted in care, always.🌿
